Coffee meeting with Data in and out of the database

If you are interested in moving data around, then you should check out this coffee meeting with Daniel Overby Hansen and Kim Berg Hansen, taking place at Cegal Danmark on Thursday June 15th, 2023, 15.00-17.30.  

The program for the afternoon consists of two great sessions with plenty of time for questions and networking:

Data Pump Best Practices and Real-World Scenarios

In this session Daniel will demonstrate best practices to use Oracle Data Pump efficiently and share information from a lot of useful and familiar real-world scenarios.

PowerHauling Data with PowerShell     

This is a sneak premiere on Kim’s newest presentation for ODTUG Kscope23 in Denver 1½ week after this coffee meeting. The presentation is about using PowerShell scripts with .NET classes to stream data from one source (a database or nearly anything else) to an Oracle, MS-SQL, or PostgreSQL database, where Oracle and MS-SQL supports BulkCopy classes to bulk insert very efficiently. Coming by public transport:

Bus 200S stops at Gladsaxe Ringvej, approx. 5 minutes’ walk from the location.

S-train line B stops at Buddinge station, approx. 15 minutes’ walk from the location.

By registering the cars numberplate in the reception, the car can be parked on the 2 floors in the P-house where it says: “Reserveret Gladsaxe Company House”.

You should note, that due to the light rail construction, there is road works and driving lanes are narrowed. Tobaksvejen is currently one way traffic, with exit by Gladsaxe Ringvej, and entrance from Gladsaxe Møllevej. It is not clear if this will be opened before June 15th, so calculate with extra time if you come by car!

Extended coffee meeting with Connor McDonald, April 26th

We are delighted that Connor McDonald has agreed to fit a visit to our user group into his busy travel schedule. Therefore, we have arranged for an onsite coffee meeting on Wednesday April 26th from 14.00 to 17.00 at SimCorp, Copenhagen.

Connor will give two of his popular sessions, and we will end the day with a 45-minute panel/Q&A/general discussion featuring Connor, Daniel Overby Hansen, and Kim Berg Hansen. This is a unique opportunity for you to meet these Oracle master minds and pick their brains.

5 great features in the database you’re probably not using

In this session, we’ll look at five things you might not have known about the Oracle Database – or that you might have known about but never realized how they could benefit you. For each topic, we will provide a detailed explanation of the functionality and demonstrated the benefits using real-world examples. The topics covered are applicable for anyone running any supported version of the Oracle Database 11g including Standard Edition, with only a couple of minor exceptions. After this session, we hope that you’ll understand a little more about these features and how they’ll benefit you and your organization.

Futuristic SQL: Making the Impossible Possible

Many people learnt SQL by picking up the basics of SELECT, FROM and WHERE clauses, plus how to use TO_CHAR to handle those pesky dates! The problem is, for many developers that is where their skillset has stayed, and along with that, their belief that SQL is limited to just this most basic of data access capabilities. Fast forward to today, and the Oracle SQL reference is a daunting 1500 pages long, and even that is only because we moved the specialist SQL features for data analytics, objects, JSON, XML, Text and Spatial into their own manuals! Our inability to keep up with the myriad of features in SQL often means we too quickly resort to a non-SQL coding solution – which can be more complicated, slower or just plain wrong. This session will bring you up to speed with modern SQL to let you supercharge your application development.

Generalforsamlingen blev afholdt ved fysisk fremmøde med mulighed for online deltagelse. Her følger referat:

Valg af dirigent: Peter Gram blev valgt. Generalforsamlingen var lovligt indvarslet.

Beretning fra formanden:
Da vi sidste år mødtes til generalforsamling var det det første fysiske møde i DOUG regi siden 2019. Åbningen af samfundet betød også, at vi efter 2 år atter kunne planlægge at afholde DOUG dag.
For at kunne tiltrække internationale speakers, valgte vi at blive del af EMEAs Oracle community Tour 2022. Dette var muligt, I kraft af vores medlemskab af EOUC, som er en sammenslutning af Oracle bruger grupper i EMEA-regionen. EOUC stod for det praktiske omkring det at finde mulige kandidater og formidle kontakten. Og vi kunne således koncentrere os om alt det praktiske.
Oracle Danmark lagde lokation til eventet. Og vi modtog sponsorater fra Cegal og Miracle42. Så tak til Oracle, Cegal og Miracle42.
Deltager prisen for event var 550 kr til dækning af forplejning. Og traditionen tro bestod dagen af et dba- og et udvikler-spor, samt en afsluttende middag med quiz. Jeg vil komme tilbage til lidt flere tal fra eventet om lidt.
I løbet af året inviterede Oracle Danmark til 2 events. Det ene var en workshop i forbindelse med SailGP eventet i København, hvor der blev arbejdet med dataopsamling fra bådende.
Det andet event var målrettet skandinaviske brugere af Oracle applications (Web Logic, Hyperion, PeopleSoft osv). Det er få danske brugere i dette segment, som er medlem af DOUG. Men vi deltog med vores DOUG- banner og talte med flere deltagere under pauserne. Umiddelbar har det ikke medført nye indmeldelser efter dette event, men vi fik gjort opmærksom på DOUG.
Meget fokus i det forgangne år gik med planlægning og afholdelse af DOUG-dagen, og vi har kun afholdt et enkelt online kaffe-møde. Nicholas fra SimCorp delte ud af hans praktiske erfaringer med Oracle databaser i Azure. Så tak til Nicholas for dette indspark.
Jeg håber, at vi i det næste år kan finde flere, som gerne vil dele ud af deres praktiske erfaringer, og have lidt flere kaffe-møder på agendaen. Det er også planen, at vi afholder DOUG dag i efteråret i samarbejde med EOUC.

Valg af bestyrelse: Kim Berg Hansen blev valgt som nyt bestyrelsesmedlem. Robert Johannesson (som ikke var til stede) havde meddelt bestyrelsen, at han gerne ville trække sit kandidatur til fordel for Kim. Robert blev derfor valgt som suppleant. Resten af bestyrelsen blev genvalgt (se indledningen).


Valg af revisorer: Lone Aalekjær blev genvalgt som revisor.

Eventuelt: Der var intet under eventuelt.

I år afholdes DOUGs generalforsamling d. 29/3 kl. 15-17 hos SimCorp i København. Der vil være mulighed for både personligt fremmøde og online deltagelse.

Vi har valgt at slå generalforsamlingen sammen med et kaffemøde. Vores gode ven og former formand Sten Vesterli vil gøre os klogere på ”Hvordan du omprogrammerer dit liv”. Her er en lille teaser fra Sten:

IT-professionelle har det nogen gange svært med arbejdsglæden. Det er egentlig mærkeligt, fordi netop folk med forstand på IT har unikke forudsætninger for at leve et lykkeligt liv. Vi lever af at skrive og ændre programmer på computere, men vi ændrer aldrig på standardindstillingerne for vores liv. Vi kører det samme program i dag som vi gjorde i går. Men vi kan ændre vores program med en række simple teknikker og få et bedre liv. Lær om det daglige “code review”, hvordan du omprogrammerer din hjerne, og hvordan du optimerer dit liv.

Large scale deployment of Oracle in Azure – online session with Nicholas Preetzmann

Nicholas Preetzmann is the system architect at SimCorp responsible for Oracle deployment in Azure. SimCorp operates hundreds of databases both in the cloud and on-prem. In this talk Nicholas will share his experiences from designing and operating a cost and performance effective solution for managing a large scale of Oracle databases in Azure. Some of the topics he will touch are:

  • Silk
  • Performance issues
  • Oracle Cloud backup
  • Ansible deployments
  • OEM
